Public Art Project
Deadline Extended to May 10th
The City of Shelbyville is currently accepting proposals from artists interested in creating commissioned public art to be displayed in downtown Shelbyville thru Friday, May 10thth. At the request of the Shelbyville Regional Arts Council, the Phase II deadline has been extended to foster competition. We urge both painters and photographers to enter this competition.
About the Shelbyville Public Art Project
Shelbyville, Kentucky is within an hour’s drive of the three major populations areas in Kentucky making it an excellent day trip destination. The Public Arts Project will be comprised of strategically located displays of public art on the outside walls of buildings in the downtown area which promote the theme “Ways to Play” in Shelbyville. Art will be converted to large, nylon woven and/or vinyl banners of varying sizes and shapes for display. This call is open to Kentucky artists only.
Selection Process
A panel of stakeholders representing the best interests of the city will select the winning entries.
About the Art
The art displays will serve as visual landmarks and should be distinctive through the use of design and color. Winning designs will enhance downtown Shelbyville. Themes should meet the following criteria:

Artists interested in creating a work of public art must submit the following by 4:00pm, Friday, May 10th to Public Art Project, Shelbyville City Hall, 315 Washington St, Shelbyville, KY 40065 or email to: fred@shelbyvillekentucky.com
Note any pictures which are emailed should be in jpeg format.

Selection of winning concepts will be made no later than May 21, 2017.

Compensation
Artists will receive $500 for each winning design payable upon completion of camera ready art and a signed release.

- Characterize Shelbyville as a unique community.
- Depict the cultural and demographic diversity of the Shelbyville community
- Feature ways to play in Shelbyville. An individual mural may feature:
- one way to play (attending a play at the regionally famous community theatre)
- or a collective concept (parks play grounds including the fully inclusive children’s playground, the dog park, the skate park.)
- Other ideas include but are not limited to: concerts, hiking, racing, car shows, the annual horse show, the annual Celebration of Lights, shopping, antiquing, dining.
- Four banners from our first round of competition last fall are in place. The themes for these banners, which should not be duplicated, include: Horses, Cyclists going along a shaded trail, the Fairgrounds, or a Festival in Town Square.
- Designs should be:
- In good taste and suitable for viewing by all ages
- Free of any logos or symbols protected by copyright laws
- A positive reflection and representation of and for the community
- Colorful and translate to banner proportions.

- A detailed, full-color sketch of your proposed art no smaller than 8.5” by 11” and no larger than a poster board. No personal identifying information should appear on the sketch.
- A detailed concept description
- Examples of other artistic work.
Awards, Responsibilities and Timetable
Selection of winning concepts will be made no later than May 21, 2017.
Winning artists must:
- Prepare camera ready art by June 19, 2017.
- Sign a release to any right of ownership.
- Participate in community awareness activities leading up to the public display
